Follow Up Appointment Number 1

Hey all!
I just returned from my first follow-up appointment at the Dr. Poon clinic.  It wasn't really much of an appointment.  They weighed me, gave me a print out of my results and I briefly sat down with a doctor.  He said I was doing well and to continue on phase one.  Do I have any questions? No, I replied.  And that was it.
So anyways, here is the break down of my progress so far:

June 6th 2013                                              June 26th 2013
Weight: 188.6                                              178.0
BMI: 32.4                                                     30.6
Fat %: 40.1%                                                37.6
Fat mass: 75.6 lbs                                         67.0
FFM: 113                                                      111
TBW: 82.8 lbs                                              81.5

So, overall I am very pleased with my results.  I still have a long ways to go, and the weight loss has been slow the past 2 weeks, but I am determined and motivated.
I'm not an expert on weight loss, but I do know that stress hormones can have an adverse effect on one's efforts.  This past week has been especially stressful for me.  As I mentioned in an earlier post, I was accepted into Dr. Poon's program because of issues surrounding infertility.  Well, without going into too much detail, we were given a blow this past week which has me feeling rather broken hearted.  I'm trying to pick myself up, dust myself off and put my focus on my weight loss journey rather than on getting pregnant for the time being.

On another note, I checked out the Low Carb Grocery as well as the low carb store at Dr. Poon's office.  I have read several complaints about the prices of cookies etc, and while true, the prices in many cases are double what one might pay for regular cookies in a regular store- I have found that the EZ Gourmet cookies allowed as an occasional snack on Dr. Poon's plan are FANTASTIC!!  I consider them to be even better than the real thing.  And because I am the only one in my family eating them, they last a lot longer!  In my opinion they are worth every penny.  I have allowed myself only 1 per day when I could really use a treat.

The next 2 weeks are going to be challenging.  My husband is starting vacation, which means more meals together, and more meals on the go.  We are also considering a last minute all-inclusive vacation south for the second week.  But I am determined to stay the course!

Hi All,
Well,  today is the end of my second week on the Dr. Poon diet.  I must admit that my enthusiasm for this program has waned.  I have had a very difficult time booking my follow up appointment.  Dr Poon told me that I could have my chart transferred from the Rouge Valley Fertility Centre to an office closer to home.  He directed me to call the office that I wished to attend and request to have my file transferred.  I won't get into in detail, but suffice to say despite a few phone calls and emails the office has yet to schedule my follow up appointment, which to my understanding should occur at the 2 week mark.
**sigh**  I know it's up to me to stick to this diet, but it sure would be nice to know that the support is there doing their part.
Okay, so part of my frustration comes from the Dr Poon staff.  The other part of my frustration is that I did not see the results this week that I had expected to see.
I did so well the first week and was so pumped.  This week I am down just 1 lb.  Yes, its still a loss.  And perhaps my expectations were unrealistically high.  I lost 7.6 lbs the first week and am now at a total loss of 8.6 (lbs).  Because I have not been back to see a doctor at the Dr. Poon office, I do not know the specifics of my loss.  Perhaps I have gained muscle or am retaining water.
I am really proud of myself for staying on track.  That is perhaps why I am disappointed with such a minor loss.  The flipside of that comment is that I know this is a marathon not a sprint.  And I am convinced that by staying the course I will eventually meet my goals.
This past weekend for Father's Day my husband and I rented a cottage and spent the weekend there with my step-son.  It was wonderful.  I managed to stay on track and eat according to the plan.  However, I did not eat as many vegetable as I would normally eat, or drink as much water (because the water was not drinkable).  Whether these to anomalies had a role in my results this week or no,t I cannot say for sure.  The other issue maybe that, while we were away, I forgot to take my thyroid medication with me and I missed 3 doses.
Having said all that, I am back on track and still determined.  I am still addicted to the Jell-O lite, and feel as though I am totally embracing this new way of eating.  I just hope my body gets the memo and catches up!
Just as I was about to sign off -I received a call from the dr. Poon's office.  My follow up appointment is finally booked!  I'll keep you posted!

Dr Poon Week One

Hello!
What a great week!  I have been doing Dr Poon's diet for one full week now and the results are amazing!  I'm so happy, so excited and most importantly so motivated to keep going!
My starting weight (on my scale) was 190.2 lbs
Today's weigh in 182.6
Total loss this week of -7.6 lbs!

When I go for my 2 week follow-up appointment at Dr Poon's Pickering office I will be given a break down of how much of my loss is body fat and how much is water.
Dr. Poon mentioned that I have a lot of water to lose.  I certainly feel as though I am retaining less.  I apologize if this is a little TMI but I typically experience moderate breast tenderness leading up to my period as result of all the excess fluid.  But this week my period completely caught me by surprise because I did not experience this symptom at all!!  What a relief!

I'm sure this diet would not be for everyone.  I am finding it easy.  I have not experienced any cravings that could not be controlled by eating an approved food off the list.  When I have needed something sweet, or fast, Jell-O lite has come to my rescue.

My mom told me that my brother had thrown his back out.  So my husband and I drove to his place to check on him.  Back pain runs in my family.  We all suffer from it from time to time.  In my case it certainly makes a difference how much weight I am carrying.  I have one of those 'as seen on TV' Back2Life machines which help to relax your back muscles and relieve back pain.  So I took it over for my brother to use.  He seemed skeptical.  My brother, who has always been slim has gained quite a bit of weight in the past 6 months or so since quitting smoking.  He also mentioned that he thought his bad back was a result of his weight.  I mentioned I had lost 7 lbs in just a week by simply cutting out sugar in all its forms.  He was blown away!  He simply could not believe I had lost so much so fast.  He said he too was going to be more mindful of his sugar intake.  I certainly hope it helps.  I hate to see anyone in pain.  especially when I've been there and know exactly how it feels.

I have an apple body type.  I don't carry lot of weight in my but, hips or thighs.  Even at 190 lbs I could still wear pants sizes 7-10 depending on the fit.  My weight is all in my belly and breasts.  Its a killer on my back.  Every morning as I get out of bed, I struggle to walk from my bedside to the wash room.  My back is so tight that each step is challenge.  Almost as though the signal from my brain has a delay getting to my legs to move.  Its amazing how much back pain can impact the simplest things.  It usually takes a couple hours of moving around before I'm back to normal.  But even my normal is pretty weak.  I've lost weight before and maintained my weight in the 160s for about 3 years, during that time my back pain was entirely alleviated.

So, while I am excited for the weight loss on an aesthetic level, I am also doing this for improving my odds of conceiving a baby and to have a body strong and fit enough to carry the weight of a pregnancy.

I'm excited with the results so far =)

Just starting Out- New to Blogging and New to Dr Poon all at once

Hello All!
I've never blogged before.  I'm not likely to be witty or wise, or full of amusing anecdotes.  The purpose of this blog is for me to document my journey on the Dr. Poon Metabolic Diet as well as to invite you all in, to give feedback, support to one another and whatever else may come of it.

Today is day 5 of the Dr Poon diet.  I have already dropped 6 lbs.  It is so motivating to see the weight coming off so quickly!

My journey began at the Rouge Valley Fertility Centre.  My husband and I have been trying to conceive for 2 years.  Dr Williams referred me to Dr Poon.  I was not sure what to expect from my meeting with Dr Poon.  I had no idea what I was getting into.  I thought the appointment was perhaps a one time nutritional counseling seminar.  Boy was I wrong!

Dr Poon, is a very matter of fact, straight shooting, man with a no nonsense approach to weight loss.  He lays out his program in a few short pages of a simple photo copied hand out, given at the first appointment.
Although, he is matter of fact in his nature, I found him to be warm and somewhat charismatic.  He took the time to explain to me, that being overweight can cause infertility by creating a hormone imbalance, too much testosterone (in women), which in turn affects the reproductive organ's ability to function properly.

My starting weight according to Dr Poon's scale is 188.6 and 40.1% body fat.
However according to my home scale, which is the tool I am using to track my success on a daily basis - my starting weight was 190.2

Here we are on the morning of day 5 184.8!
I wish I could just fast forward to the end of the month to see where I will be.  I'm going to have to be patient.

So far, I'm finding the program to be easy.  I was worried I would be white-knuckling my way through each meal.  However, I have not missed the carbs at all!  I am however eating Jell-O Lite like it is going out of style.  That stuff is a life saver on this plan.
I'm also convinced that the key to my success moving forward is having food already prepared and ready to eat in the fridge.  At the moment I have a handful of cooked shrimp thawed and ready to eat, a piece of cooked salmon, left over chicken, salad washed and ready to go and of course Jell-O!  It helps knowing  that I can grab something quickly without a lot of prep-work.

Here's to another day of staying the course and becoming a healthier me.  Good luck all!
